Understanding Kidney Disease
Your Kidneys' Vital Role.
Kidney disease is a common health issue that affects millions of people worldwide. My aim is to provide a simple and straightforward explanation of kidney disease, including its causes, symptoms, risk factors, and ways to maintain kidney health
Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist, located on either side of your spine. They play a crucial role in maintaining your overall health. Kidneys help filter waste products and excess fluids from your blood, regulate blood pressure, produce essential hormones, and maintain the balance of important minerals in your body.
Kidney disease can develop for various reasons, but two primary causes are worth noting:
- Chronic Conditions: Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can damage the tiny blood vessels in your kidneys over time, leading to kidney disease.
- Infections and Inflammation: Infections and inflammation can directly harm the kidneys or result from conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs) or autoimmune diseases.
Kidney disease often progresses silently without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. However, as it advances, you might experience:
- Swelling: swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, or face due to fluid retention.
- Infections and Inflammation: Infections and inflammation can directly harm the kidneys or result from conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs) or autoimmune diseases.
